Our Season of Creation ends with the Blessing of Animals on the feast of Saint Francis (4). We move seamlessly into a month dedicated to greater awareness of the consistent ethic of life. Respect Life Sunday (6) is one aspect of this observance.

The original covenant of love was initiated by God. God made that covenant with our spiritual ancestors and commits to that covenant with each one of us today. Commitments and relationships and connections are at the heart of the questions posed in this week’s readings. 

Family life is a sign of God’s blessing, the psalmist tells us. Then he paints a quaint illustration of what that means. The wife is a fruitful vine in the protective quarters of the home.

I smile to hear Jesus insist on hanging out with little kids. My favorite part of parish ministry has always involved young children.

I've been married dozens of times—all to the same woman. In any relationship you have to keep committing and recommitting as times and circumstances change and you come to know more about your partner and yourself.

As we prepare to celebrate the mystery of Christ’s love and the one through whom all things exist, let us call to mind our sins.

Pure, holy simplicity confounds all the wisdom of this world and the wisdom of the flesh.
