The theme of vigilance is being struck again this week. It’s good to become alert and aware of what’s percolating inside at this turbulent time of endings and new beginnings.

Isaiah promises comfort to the people—that God will be like a shepherd who feeds us, gathers us, and leads us with care.

Some things take forever to get here. Whether it’s the arrival of a friend, a birthday, or the holiday season we’re anticipating, the day can’t come fast enough.

What is new is old. God has always loved us. The Messiah is the ultimate sign of that love.

We are called upon to be like John the Baptist and “prepare the way of the Lord.” In our homes and workplaces we do that in many ways.

As we journey through this season of Advent, in hope we bring our prayers before our God, who comes to us in the wildernesses and deserts of our lives.

In bringing his message to the lost sheep of Israel, John recalled several features of Israel’s history and tradition.
