You might ask yourself who comes to mind when you think of those blessed in the gospel beatitudes: the poor in spirit, pure in heart, the merciful, sorrowing, honest, the peacemakers, those who suffer for the sake of righteousness. 

On the celebration of All Saints the readings tell of the salvation that calls together the people of God and bestows blessings up on them.

What does it take to be a saint in this world? Two miracles and a lot of good press? Martyrdom for the right cause? Canonization can be achieved on these terms, but it takes a bit more to be actually counted among the blessed.

When you look in a mirror do you see God? You should. In more than any other way God is revealed through people. With each act of forgiveness, compassion, and justice we bring God’s face in view. 

Blessed are the peacemakers . . .” says Jesus. “But where are the peacemakers?” we might well ask, in this age of seemingly endless conflict, strife, and warfare. 

Gathered from every nation, race, people, and tongue, we offer our prayers to the God who saves us.

The gospel takes the beatitudes a step further by using them to describe the inhabitants of the kingdom of God.
