Since 1990 when the National Black Catholic Caucus voted to designate November as Black Catholic History Month, this month has been special to the more than 3 million Black Catholics in the United States.

The feast of Christ the King recognizes the triumph of Jesus, the one who testified to the truth with his words and with his life.

Power is a tricky business. Many will try to win it, buy it, or obtain it by whatever means necessary. Yet power remains elusive even to those who seek and desire it.

Calling Christ a king has always been problematic, particularly for Jesus, himself. Yes, Jesus was a leader, who wanted people to follow him. But Jesus was a servant leader whose main mission was to bring truth and show people the way to love.

In History of the World, Mel Brooks, playing Louis XVI, had a running gag: “It’s good to be the king.” It implied that the king was free to do whatever he wanted, wherever he wanted, and however he wanted to do it.

Christ is our King, who judges us fairly and with love, let us confess our faults to him and so prepare ourselves for the sacred mysteries.

A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.
