Imagine what it would be like to have Jesus literally “make his dwelling” with you, as he promised he and the Father would do with those who were faithful.

Years ago, a popular song by the band R.E.M. sold a lot of records and won several awards—and caused great parental distress. The song was called “Losing My Religion.” Parents are generally not crazy about the music their kids are into, but in this case their disapproval was rooted in misunderstanding.

Anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one knows how devastated Jesus’ disciples must have felt when he told them he was going away for good. The “Advocate” he promised to send must have seemed like a poor substitute for the flesh-and-blood Jesus whom they had come to love and depend upon.

Today's second reading, from Revelation, offers the image of the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven. This powerful image has entered religious and popular culture in many ways over the years.

As our celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection continues in this Easter season, we turn to God with faith in God’s mercy.
