Believing in Jesus, our good shepherd, makes us God’s children and opens us to God’s love, healing, and salvation. Out of this relationship, spiritual benefits flow. The key lies in accepting Jesus as savior.

Years back I spoke to a youth group about the church. I offered them the opportunity to “vote” on the models of the church as described by Jesuit theologian Avery Dulles. I outlined each one and had the students consider the ideas privately before pledging their allegiances.

I have had the privilege of being up close and watching Gretchen become a mother. She worked through the months of pregnancy, as so many mothers do, eventually growing big enough for fellow travelers to give her a seat on public transportation.

I remember how badly it stung. The kids in the neighborhood were choosing up sides for a pickup game of touch football, and I was odd man out. Rejected.

Only God can lead us to salvation, and in prayer we express our dependence on God and God’s mercy.

Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it is the only thing.
