From one to many and back to one. That’s how the readings for Pentecost Sunday describe the work of the Holy Spirit.

These days, it’s not enough to say what you mean. If you really want to communicate, you also have to frame your idea in such a way that it will be embraced by the audience you wish to reach. This involves being sensitive to things like inclusive language and multicultural idioms, not to mention local concerns and bilingual accommodations.

Later on that day, the disciples had gathered together, but, fearful of the Jews, had locked all the doors in the house. Jesus entered, stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.” Then he showed them his hands and side.

I must’ve been about 10. Maybe 11. It’s funny how details such as our age don’t matter when we 've been changed. I don’t even remember what was going on my life. I do remember that life at home was difficult.

When I think of Pentecost I think of teaching my younger daughter to ride her bike. It was about this time of year many years ago that she was ready to try riding without training wheels.

A roomful of disgruntled citizens—parents, teachers, students—sat around the table with big shots from city hall for a “listening session.”

At the wake of the priest who had died suddenly, I overheard among those standing around sadly that they felt he had “walked the talk.” That is an interesting expression.

Jesus was one with God. In prayer we ask for greater unity with Christ.

Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.
