Repent! Augustine of Hippo once said in a homily, "The Lord Jesus began his preaching of the gospel with the admonition, 'Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.' His forerunner, John the Baptist, began his in the same way: 'Repent,' he said, 'for the kingdom of God is at hand.' " As he does on the second and third Sundays of Advent every year, John the Baptist makes an appearance, this year with his message of repentance--metanoein, a change of mind and a return to the things of God. In the season of Advent, he invites his hearers to ready themselves, for the Lord is coming, and the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Homily points It's easy to sing about making a personal commitment to peace. But the work of justice is a harder task to take up. Justice is the foundation of peace, from the prophetic tradition to the teachings of Jesus. A just world means that disparities between advantaged and disadvantaged people must be bridged. This task requires sacrifice from the advantaged, naturally. A just world is guaranteed, by repentance or the ax. The peaceable kingdom will be established one way or the other.
