When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne. Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats, putting sheep to his right and goats to his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this Kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. We tend to judge ourselves and others using the criteria of comparison, or objective laws. The activity of judging is itself a road best not taken, because God alone has the right to judge. If we want to know the criteria by which we will be judged, the corporal works of mercy hold the key. A broad understanding of the works of mercy will unite us to the compassion of God.

The psalm offers a litany of praise for God’s sometimes surprising ways of mercy, compassion, and kindness—so different and above human standards of justice. This unexpected generosity presents the choice to “turn to the Lord for mercy” and “conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Is salvation earned, deserved, or just? If all are shown mercy, is God’s house only for you? Can you accept that healing isn’t always up to you? Are you jealous of your neighbors with more: happiness, wealth, success? God is praised for blessing all, loving all, making room for all. Jesus teaches us there are no exceptions to God’s blessings. Be persistent in your faith and mercy will be shown you, guaranteed.
