Penitential Act Invitation Like the shepherds who went in haste to see the child Jesus, we eagerly seek to receive God’s forgiveness and blessings. Invocations Lord God, you are the source of all life and goodness. Bless us and protect us from sin and evil. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you show us the face of God. Let us respond with love and praise for you. Christ, have mercy. Lord God, you give us peace. Make us whole in mind, body, and spirit and one with you. Lord, have mercy. On this feast of the Holy Family, family imagery abounds. Ben Sira lays down a system of behavior and reward: If you honor your parents, your prayers will be heard and you’ll get children, long life, and banked-up righteousness you can use against your sins. Prayer and blessing figure in Hannah’s story as well, though perhaps on a deeper level: She dedicates Samuel—gift-for-gift—to perpetual service in the Temple. Like Hannah, Mary and Joseph are also on a routine ritual trip to the Temple with their miracle-child, which turns into something much different. Both Samuel and Jesus find new familial allegiances as children of God—in Jesus’ case God’s only Son—which is exactly what the epistles are talking about: what it looks like to “put on” Christ and be his beloved children. We know and revere the Holy Family, but why have a feast for them? To learn what it means to be a member of the one family of God and do what our scriptural brothers and sisters we hear of today do: Believe, love, and give thanks.

"Out of Egypt I called my son." Going to and returning from Egypt have always been significant journeys in scripture. By quoting Hosea 11:1, Matthew ties the flight of the Holy Family to two stories from Hebrew scripture. In Genesis 46:3-4 God says to Jacob, "Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt . . . I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again." And in Exodus 4:19-20, "The Lord said to Moses in Midian, 'Go back to Egypt; for all those who were seeking your life are dead.' So Moses took his wife and his sons, put them on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt . . . ." Like Jacob, Jesus (as a child) goes into Egypt and returns to the Land of Israel; in both cases, a new people of God is born. And like Moses, Jesus will lead people to freedom. Homily points What makes a family holy? Not necessarily pious rituals, but certainly the commitment to "put on love." The original Holy Family was not pious in a static way but dynamically obedient to the will of God. Even in less than ideal circumstances, Joseph trusted in God for the welfare of his family. Messy family systems can still be holy if redeemed by the grace of God and conform to the virtues that make us whole and wholly like God.
