The universal prayer The Magi brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Let us bring our prayers like gifts before the newborn king. Lord our God, may we seek your glory not only in the great and powerful but also in the small and lowly, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer. Lord our God, may the powers of the world serve you by loving justice and making peace, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer. Lord our God, may we let the light you have given us shine through us, doing good to others and giving you glory, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer. Lord our God, may those of us gathered at this Eucharist offer ourselves in praise and homage, we pray: Lord, hear our prayer. God of light, you gather your people under a star of redemption. Hear the prayers we bring before you that you may lead us to your radiant kingdom, where we live for ever and ever.

This Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany with examples of various ways God’s presence is revealed. How do I best see God manifested in my own life and work? The Magi were led by a star to the birthplace of Jesus. Am I attentive to the signs in my life that are leading me toward God and holiness? Do I recognize that both my joys and my dissatisfactions may be prompts from God leading me to more abundant life? Do I respect other sources of spiritual wisdom while continuing to embrace the truth of my own faith? Isaiah proclaims, “Nations shall walk by your light.” What examples can I imagine of how the larger community benefits from the light and goodness generated by the faith community that will gather this Sunday?
