In reading the Acts of the Apostles, you’re reminded of the newness of the teachings and life of Jesus. Where do you fit in the story?

Home is an emotionally charged word. The nostalgia it elicits is full of longing for those who yearn to return to a happier time. It’s also powerful to those whose memories are more bitter, and who might wish to turn back the clock to rewrite the past.

That same day two of them were walking to the village Emmaus, about seven miles out of Jerusalem. They were deep in conversation, going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their talk and questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them.

Not long ago, I felt overwhelmed with my position as pastoral minister in a thriving parish. People were in the hospital; I had promised visits and could not get to them. I had committee deadlines that were hanging over my head, and a few people who were not happy with decisions I had made.

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

If . . . I were asked for the most important advice I could give . . . I should simply say: in the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.
