Truly there is no season when the bracing and challenging words of the prophets are not needed. This month, prophecy rules in the daily Mass readings, as we hear from Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Jeremiah in turns.

The message that comes across loud and clear in today’s readings is that God satisfies our hungers.

Last week we emphasized the reality of spiritual hunger and the necessity to engage the spiritual works of mercy. This weekend’s gospel provides ballast for that idea by reminding us that physical hunger is just as real and has a vital claim on our compassion.

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I got suckered by an online scam and it cost me $500. It was a convincing ruse, but the reason I was duped is because I was stressed out, in a rush, and not paying close attention.

Some food is better eaten the next day. That is why it’s always good to make enough for leftovers. Cold pizza makes a great breakfast for some.

Like the crowds who followed Jesus, we seek him and ask him for forgiveness and healing and so prepare the sacred mysteries.

I am the Prodigal Son every time I search for unconditional love where it cannot be found.
