In a month when school-age children look forward to closing their books for some well-needed summer fun, we adults might consider opening the books . . . of Kings, that is. Our weekday liturgies will largely pursue a continuous reading about biblical kings who managed their leadership well or badly. Lessons about how to lead—and which prophets to heed—are vital in every age.

God in Jesus calms even what seems like the most unconquerable disturbances, like storms at sea.

Interesting things happen when Jesus gets near water. It may turn into wine as it did at Cana, though that was atypical. A voice from heaven could make declarations of his favored status, as occurred near the Jordan. Healings might take place, as at the pools of Bethesda, or disciples could be made, as in Galilee.

Recovering after serious surgery, I found myself attached to multiple machines and lines distributing and infusing my body. 0ne by one these connections would be removed. But I remained fearful.

My daughter was having a meltdown in the middle of the lobby of the Playboy Building, which, oddly enough, houses her pediatrician’s office. She did not want to leave, but she didn’t want to stay.

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. 

Do not look forward to the trials and crosses of this life and fear. Rather, look to them with full confidence that, as they arise, God, to whom you belong, will deliver you from them.
