The empty tomb is a big part of the story of Jesus’ death and Resurrection, themes that are central to this Sunday’s readings, which focus on Jesus as the "firstborn of the dead,” as the Gospel Alleluia says, quoting the Book of Revelation. In the innermost chamber of the site said to be the tomb of Jesus, a restoration team has peeled away a marble layer for the first time in centuries in an effort to reach what it believes is the original rock surface where Jesus' body was laid.

"The techniques we're using to document this unique monument will enable the world to study our findings as if they themselves were in the tomb of Christ."

Today six denominations—Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Egyptian Copts, Syriacs, and Ethiopians—celebrate their rites in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and manage a share of the building.
