Reaction to historic healthcare legislation reaches fever pitch

The Passion narrative this Sunday describes the disciples debating and breaking into argument during the Last Supper. The health-care legislation passed in a contentious session of the U.S. House of Representatives last Sunday and signed into law Tuesday will continue to be a flash point for national debate, to the media pundits' delight. As Democratic supporters celebrated the bill's passage, Republicans opened a campaign to repeal the legislation and to use it as a weapon in this year's hotly contested midterm elections. "We will not allow this to stand," Representative Michele Bachmann, Republican of Minnesota, promised Monday afternoon as the House reconvened a day after the bitterly partisan vote. Democrats said they would focus on explaining the measure to their constituents and on highlighting some immediate benefits, such as insurers being barred from dropping coverage when someone gets sick or refusing to insure a child with pre-existing conditions. They called on Republicans to ease off on their attacks now that the legislation had passed. "It is time to chill out, Republicans," said Representative Bob Filner, Democrat of California. "Let this bill work. Let our constituents finally get health care." That won't happen if the attorneys general of 13 states--12 of them Republicans--get their way. Minutes after President Barack Obama signed the landmark legislation into law Tuesday, they filed a lawsuit that claims the new law's requirement for all Americans to buy health insurance is unconstitutional. Legal scholars say that there are significant legal hurdles in establishing the states' standing to challenge the health-care law and in persuading federal judges that it violates the Constitution. Most constitutional law experts say the health insurance mandate is clearly within Congress' reach under the Constitution. Around the country reaction to the bill's passage was emotional, and in some cases violent. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland, contends the health reform bill will wind up being politically popular after people realize what it really does. "We're going to make sure . . . that the American public understands what this bill does--understands how it positively affects them and their families and their small businesses in our country . . . ." Many want a religious president but fuzzy on details

The psalmist this Sunday calls upon all nations to praise God. A majority of Americans want their presidents to do the same, with 56 percent saying it’s important for a presidential candidate to have strong beliefs even if those beliefs differ from their own. Yet those most firmly in support of a religious chief executive have trouble identifying the faiths of President Barack Obama and Republican contenders Mitt Romney and Rep. Michele Bachmann. For instance, only 44 percent of white evangelicals know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) in partnership with Religion News Service. At the same time more than 8 in 10 evangelicals say Mormon religious beliefs greatly differ from their own. Only one in three Americans can correctly identify Obama’s Christian faith. Consistent with previous polls, about one in five Americans--18 percent--think Obama is Muslim. And a full 40 percent say they don’t know what Obama’s religion is. Daniel Cox, research director at PRRI, said Romney’s Mormonism could be a liability: Of people who say Mormon beliefs are significantly different from their own, Obama leads Romney, 49 percent to 28 percent. White evangelicals are the group most likely to say they don’t know what Bachmann’s beliefs are even though she attends a Baptist church, and only 35 percent say she has similar religious beliefs to them. Republicans and Tea Party members are significantly more likely than Democrats to say it’s important for a presidential candidate to have strong religious beliefs, pollsters said. All for the good

Catholic Schools Week is the perfect time to reflect on what we can learn from our Catholic schoolchildren. One young student wrote in a religion class report, “If you do good things, you will have good experiences. If you do bad things, you will have bad experiences.” This simple yet profound understanding of virtuous living echoes Jesus’ teaching in the gospel: “The measure you give will be the measure you get.” If we want the young people in our lives to lead lives of love and good works, we do well to model those actions ourselves.
