This Sunday parishes nationwide will pass the basket for the Catholic Communication Campaign, designed to support media outreach that helps inform and educate Catholics and the general public on Catholic concerns. Continuing the recent Vatican push to reform church institutions in the U.S., Pope Benedict XVI has called on Catholic colleges and universities to do more to affirm their “Catholic identity,” particularly by ensuring the doctrinal orthodoxy of their faculty and staff.Speaking to a group of bishops from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Wyoming, who are in Rome on a regularly scheduled visit, Benedict last Saturday said there has been a “growing recognition” on the part of Catholic colleges of the need to “reaffirm their distinctive identity.” But “much remains to be done,” the pope said, singling out the church law requirement that Catholic theology teachers “have a mandate from the competent ecclesiastical authority,” usually the local bishop.That requirement was introduced more than 20 years ago by Pope John Paul II, according to the Father Scott Brodeur, a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. But there has been “continuous resistance against it. If he is repeating it, it is because it has not yet been fully implemented,” Brodeur said.Benedict's remarks come a few months after the U.S. bishops’ doctrine committee denounced Quest for the Living God, by Sister Elizabeth Johnson, C.S.J., Distinguished Professor of Theology at the Jesuit-run Fordham University in New York, as not in accord with “authentic Catholic teaching.” The book’s publisher, Continuum, saw a resurgence in interest—and sales—of the book after the denounciation.Benedict said Saturday that the need for theology professors to be faithful to church doctrine becomes “all the more evident” when considering the “confusion” created by “instances of apparent dissidence between some representatives of Catholic institutions and the Church’s pastoral leadership.” The pope warned that such discord “harms the church’s witness and, as experience has shown, can easily be exploited to compromise her authority and her freedom.” Sources: Articles by Alessandro Speciale for Religion News Service and The Tablet (UK)

“The Lord protects strangers,” the psalmist declares this Sunday. Catholic colleges do a pretty good job, too, at least according to an increasing number of Muslim students who choose to attend Roman Catholic schools rather than secular ones because they prefer a place where talking about religious beliefs and adherence to a religious code are accepted and even encouraged.”I like the fact that there's faith, even if it's not my faith, and I feel my faith is respected,” said Maha Haroon, a Muslim born in Pakistan who attends Creighton University in Nebraska. The flow of students from the Muslim world into American colleges and universities has grown sharply in recent years, and women, though still far outnumbered by men, account for a rising share. No definitive figures are available, but interviews with students and administrators at several Catholic institutions indicate an even faster rate of growth there, with the Muslim student population generally doubling over the past decade and the number of Muslim women tripling or more.At those schools, many Muslim students said they believe that they are more accepted than they would be at secular schools. Haroon and her twin sister, Zoha, said they chose Creighton based in part on features rooted in its religious identity, such as community service requirements and theology classes that shed light on how different faiths approach ethical issues. “I don’t have to leave my faith at home when I come to school,” Maha said. FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

Get ready to fulfill your destiny

The information in scripture on Jesus’ childhood is a bit sketchy. At the end of the story of the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple, we learn that Jesus “grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.” When we next hear of him, Jesus is 12 years old, discussing Jewish teachings at the temple, and “astounding” those who hear him. Quite a bit of growth and development obviously transpired in the intervening years! Mary and Joseph are the unsung heroes here, for having nurtured and raised Jesus in such a way that he was ready to fulfill his destiny. How can you continue to grow and develop in your faith?
