Penitential Act Invitation As we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus when God poured down the Holy Spirit, we ask that God bless us with the grace of forgiveness. Invocations For when we have failed to act justly. Lord, have mercy. For when we have not responded to the good news of Jesus. Christ, have mercy. For when we have shown prejudice of any kind. Lord, have mercy. Prayer of the Faithful The universal prayer Lord Jesus Christ, your glory was revealed in your Baptism, and with you was God well-pleased. Bless the church that it may be cleansed in the spirit of the Lord; Bless the nations of the world that they may drink from the cup of peace; Bless our parish community that we may remember the promises of our Baptism; In this Year of Consecrated Life, bless men and women in religious life that their time of renewal is joy filled and lifegiving. May our prayers also find favor in the eyes of God, at whose right hand you sit, with the Spirit, for ever and ever.

Lord, your covenant with us makes us a light to nations. May the church show forth your justice and peace to the world, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, your word is mightier than any human power. May the powerful of this world, especially those who act in your name, exercise their authority with concern for the good of all, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, in your time on earth you went about doing good. May we in imitation of you also be a healing presence to those who suffer, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, you show no partiality. May we be a community that treats and welcomes everyone as your children without prejudice of any kind, Lord, hear our prayer. Lord our God, you save us through rebirth in your Spirit. With that Spirit we ask you to hear our prayers, in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

It’s time to answer the baptismal call

The gospel story of Jesus’ baptism shows how Jesus answered the call to be the instrument of God’s salvation in the world. With the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, members of the church, made beloved of God by baptism, can rededicate themselves to follow Jesus and proclaim the Good News with their lives. National Vocation Awareness Week, which begins this Sunday, celebrates, in the words of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, “vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, or consecrated life in particular. During these days families and the parish community are urged to nurture the faith of their children to prepare them to respond to whatever God’s call is for them.” The VISION Vocation Network, vocation-network.org, offers resources to promote vocations among Catholics of all ages. As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord this Sunday, the readings make clear Jesus’ favored status in the eyes of God: Peter preaches that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power, while Isaiah speaks of him as the chosen one, and, echoing Isaiah, the gospel describes a voice from heaven that proclaims Jesus “the beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.” Facebook president and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has gotten somewhat similar treatment in recent weeks. A short while after being chosen as TIME magazine's “Man of the Year” for 2010, Zuckerberg received the endorsement of Wall Street in the form of a $500 million investment by Goldman Sachs and a partner company. Goldman plans to raise at least $1.5 billion more for Facebook from private investors in a deal that is raising eyebrows at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In fewer than seven years Zuckerberg has developed a website visited by a twelfth of the world and has helped change the way people communicate online, which is why TIME singled him out. And this week he struck a deal with Goldman to create an investment vehicle that allows hundreds of wealthy investors to buy equity in Facebook, potentially blurring the line between public and private companies. Current SEC regulations require companies with 500 or more shareholders to publicly disclose certain financial information to give investors an idea of the risks they face when they buy stock. In light of the special investment vehicle created for the Facebook deal, the SEC is taking a hard look at whether disclosure rules need to change now that hundreds of investors are buying into privately held Internet companies without those companies being obligated to make public disclosures.
