A 13-year-old boy who was suspended for wearing a rosary to school says he did so in remembrance of his younger brother, who died while clutching it after a bicycle accident. A federal judge Tuesday ordered Oneida Middle School in New York State to reinstate Raymond Hosier pending a hearing into whether the suspension violated his civil rights. Hosier originally received a one-week suspension for refusing to take off his prayer beads or hide them under his shirt two weeks ago. Hosier, saying he won't go to school without the rosary, was suspended again last week when he returned to school with it. Other school districts have punished students for wearing rosaries. In February a 14-year-old boy in Haverstraw, in southeastern New York, was suspended a day for wearing a rosary. And in Texas a Dallas high school student was told to stop wearing her rosary in September 2008. In recent years rosaries worn by celebrities including Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Dakota Fanning, and soccer star David Beckham have made the Catholic prayer beads popular as jewelry. Liturgically we may still be green, yet harvest colors dominate the scene as nature goes somber—and the rest of us with it. Sunday observance eclipses Our Lady of the Rosary this year, but that’s no reason to neglect the beads during Rosary Month. The church observes Respect Life Sunday (7), World Mission Sunday (21), and Priesthood Sunday (28). We also celebrate a saint every other day in October, including two contemporary popes, John XXIII (11) and John Paul II (22), and American martyrs Isaac Jogues, John de Brébeuf, and companions (19). In this segment we include All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day/Day of the Dead (Nov. 2). Meanwhile the secular calendar pays tribute to Columbus (8), World Mental Health Day, sponsored by the World Health Organization (10), World Day for Poverty Eradication, founded by Father Joseph Wresinski and adopted by the U.N. in 1992 (17), and United Nations Day, acknowledging the need for all countries to work together for the common good (24). And let’s not forget Halloween, now the second most significant retail event of the year. Our alter egos gravitate toward heroes and demons—any way we can hijack that in favor of saints?
