When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne. We tend to judge ourselves and others using the criteria of comparison, or objective laws. The activity of judging is itself a road best not taken, because God alone has the right to judge. If we want to know the criteria by which we will be judged, the corporal works of mercy hold the key. A broad understanding of the works of mercy will unite us to the compassion of God.

What have I done to alienate myself from God and others, and what have I failed to do? Take a moment to ponder these questions. Then ask yourself, What good have I done out of love for God and neighbor, and what temptations have I avoided? Now that you've acknowledged the worst and best in you, you're ready for the greatest work of your life: God's corporal works. Who are the hungry, thirsty, naked, lonely, and imprisoned in my congregation, how can I aide them? Where is the greatest need in myself and in those around me? What will satisfy it? What can we do together?

Valerian and Tiburtius became converts to Christianity during the third century through the urging and inspiration of Saint Cecilia. They, along with Saint Cecilia, were martyred for their faith. What capital crimes did Valerian and Tiburtius commit against the state? They buried their dead, which was against the Roman law. Burying the dead is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy—deeds that have to do with providing bodily comfort. The others are feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, tending to prisoners, sheltering the homeless, and visiting the sick. In memory of these early martyrs, practice a work of mercy this week. Readings: Revelation 14:1-3, 4b-5; Luke 21:1-4. “These follow the Lamb wherever he goes.”

Republicans stumble in abortion debate

“Teach me your paths,” the psalmist says this Sunday, seeking to take a new direction in life. House Republicans abruptly changed directions Wednesday, dropping a bill that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks. They abandoned legislation that at one time seemed certain to pass the chamber but fell victim to intra-party disputes over concerns that the law would alienate women voters. Homily hint: When it comes to abortions, politicians of all stripes still seem stuck on enacting more laws for or against abortion. Meanwhile, year after year pregnant women in very difficult situations struggle to find the support they need to carry their pregnancies to term. Let’s turn our attention to enacting the corporal works of mercy that these women so desperately need. When I was a boy playing the back yards of the old neighborhood, my friend Hillel, who lived across the alley, would just stop in the middle of whatever we were playing—kick the can, red rover, whatever—and shout out, “WHO IS HAVING MORE FUN THAN WE ARE?” It’s not surprising. His dad was a rabbi. Imbedded in Judaism is a deep and profound love for and commitment to celebrating the Jubilee. Incredibly, the 50th-year jubilee meant emancipating slaves and giving land sold to pay debts back to the owner. They found it fun. The ram’s horn would be blown. They understood that justice and mercy brought joy. We are currently in the middle of the Jubilee of Mercy, a year set aside by Pope Francis to live out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. (Don’t remember them from Confirmation? Google them). We are called to open the doors to all who need us. This is Divine Mission Sunday. Easter has just been celebrated. The risen Jesus is in our midst. It is a time to act, a time for miracles. Pick one of the works of mercy. Practice it and have fun doing it.
