How would all the new disciples be “caught”? The message that would hook them and that catches us today is the challenge to care for one another and in doing so reflect our love of God.
As the Easter season plays out, we observe that the disciples “see” Jesus in all the old familiar places—when they gather together, when they break the bread, when they preach the Good News, and when they heal the sick.
The apostles were confused and frightened even before the risen Jesus appeared in their midst. But as he often did, he told them, “Be not afraid,” and then he breathed on them.
It is true that a lot of us get it wrong a lot of the time, but every so often, like the apostles and the earliest disciples of the risen Christ, we actually live in a way that would make Jesus proud.
Because we have not seen the physical, resurrected Jesus, we might be tempted to make Jesus’ Resurrection more of a theological concept rather than the core of our lived-out faith.
Fishermen will often be out on the lake before dawn, sitting quietly observing how the light filters in and brings clarity to the shoreline, the trees, the horizon. The true meaning of the Resurrection has to “dawn” on us like that—over time—just as it did for the first disciples on the scene on Easter morning.
Living in a family is a great way to learn that people’s biggest fault is typically just the flip side of their best virtue.
Our image of an entrepreneur—especially in the dot com era—is of a 20-something single person who has nothing to lose by taking a risk. But risk-takers actually come in all ages.
Two thousand years have passed since the events of the first Easter. To this day what happened remains a mystery.
